Sunset Hill Tree Farm

By Miranda Gonzalez, the Mac Kid publisher for the Mansfield-Burleson area in North Texas December 2, 2019

Sunset Hill Tree Farm is a seasonal farm off the beaten path in Alvarado, Texas. It is a little bit of a drive down a few country back roads, but it is well worth it. As we were in the car driving out to get our tree, the kid's excitement grew with each mile. The scenery on the drive was so pretty, with beautiful houses, shady trees, and lots of farm animals.

Pulling into the large field that doubles as a parking lot, I knew we had made the right choice for this year's tree shopping. We unloaded from the car and were met with all the smells of the season-fresh cut trees, smoke from the bonfire, and the crisp, late autumn breeze. Children were running around, some dressed in their Sunday best for pictures, and others in farm boots and hoodies.

Donna, a retired school teacher and owner of the farm, greeted us at the entrance and let us know where everything was. Unfortunately, their cut your own trees were already sold out for the season, but there was a good size lot with pre-cut trees for us to choose from. She also pointed out the cafe, wreath shop, gift shop, and family fun area. Before she could finish, the kids were running off, ready to explore.

Back behind the lot of trees is a vast, open play area. We chased the kids through the maze, pushed them on the rope swing, and took pictures on the bridge. They really enjoyed the animals in the petting zoo, especially the bottle fed calfs.

My youngest had a lot of fun lasso-ing my husband and I from her "horsie." We got her a pair of cowgirl boots a couple months ago, and ever since then, she likes to call herself a cowgirl. It was hard to get her off her horse when it was time to go, and she has been asking to go back and ride on it ever since we got home!

When you visit, make sure you check out the wreath shop. It is almost indescribable, how the fresh cut pine scent just wraps around you as walk in the door. Somehow, the lighting is even more clear and pure inside the shop than outside in the open air. If walking into the wreath shop doesn't get you in the holiday spirit, I don't know what will.

Eventually we found the perfect tree! It was a tough decision because all the trees were of amazing quality, with evenly spaced branches and straight trunks. Now all that is left is the decorating!

Sunset Hill Tree Farm is open Saturdays and Sundays in December from 9am to 5pm, or until they sell out of trees.
