If you've spent more than one Christmas season with little kids, you know how hard it can be to get them to leave the tree alone after it is decorated. There is something about putting the ornaments on the tree that all kids love, and they want to do it ALL.THE.TIME!
This year I decided to make a tree that they could decorate and redecorate to their hearts content!
By making a Felt Christmas Tree, and the ornaments out of felt, we were able to make a Christmas tree that is so much more kid-friendly than the real thing.
You will need:
1 yard of green felt
About 10 squares of felt of various colors (we used traditional Christmas colors and sparkly white, but the color choices are totally up to you!)
Felt Glue
Scissors
I spent just under $10 at Hobby Lobby for all this stuff. The felt was on sale, and I used the 40% off coupon for the glue.
First, I created some basic ornament shapes on the computer. You can click here for the PDF printable of shapes. Just print it and cut them out, and use as stencils to create the ornaments. You can see my girls tracing them onto felt. We then cut them out. *Pro Tip* I let the girls cut them out, but then I tidied up the edges. That way they get to do the craft, and my OCD doesn't go crazy over the jagged edges.
After they had the shapes cut out, we cut out stripes and circles and glued them on the ornament with the felt glue to make designs.
To make the tree, I folded the felt in half and cut out the tree shape along the open edge, just like we used to do with construction paper in grade school. I had my husband help me nail it into the wall, and let the kids have fun decorating!
They all absolutely love their Felt Christmas Tree. I just put it up today and it has already been redecorated a handful of times!
I hope you enjoy this craft!
