Articles must be about an event your child attended that you found on the Macaroni Kid event calendar, or it can be a review of a local business in the following towns: Mansfield, Burleson, Alvarado, Joshua, Keene, Cleburne, or Crowley. If your child's article is chosen, they will receive a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop as a thank-you. Junior Reporter is open to children 17 years and younger.

The Great Backyard Bird Count was so cool! It was at Elmer Oliver Park in Mansfield. There were a lot of craft tables. We got to make bird feeders, dissect owl pellets, and see tons of birds. I really liked dissecting the owl pellets. I found a rat skull, jawbone, and ribs! I also found several vertebrae and even it's tiny little paws.

There were 3 different hikes you could go on. We got there early so we went on the first one. We got to see a ton of birds! My favorites were the Northern Cardinals. They have pretty crests with a red color. I also like the Great Blue Heron. It was really big with crazy head feathers. We also saw phoebes, sparrows, and woodpeckers. I loved that I got to see some birds I had never seen before, like the Cardinals and Black Phoebes.

I think any bird lover will adore the Great Backyard Bird Count!

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an event that is held every February all across the nation. Local bird-watchers collect data about the types of species and number of birds they see, all on the same day, and send the info to Cornell University's ornithology department

Watch the Macaroni Kid calendar next year so you can join in the fun. And you can become a Macaroni Kid insider, so you don't miss any other cool events going on in our community.
