Opal’s Farm, named after community activist Opal Lee, has started operating a five-acre urban farm east of downtown to address food deserts and improve local health. Lee’s vision is to provide farm-fresh, nutritious food and meaningful employment for residents.
“Everyone deserves healthy food, but many neighborhoods only have access to processed junk,” said Greg Joel, Farm Manager. “We will provide healthy options and education on how to use them.”
Unity Unlimited, Inc. was granted the land by the Tarrant Regional Water District to create the farm. Located near the Trinity River, the farm uses 100% organic methods with a focus on soil conservation and environmental care.
The farm aims to create jobs, offer job training, and foster entrepreneurship and self-reliance. This initiative will connect food production, processing, and distribution, bringing fresh produce directly to the community.
